Lepsi od Węgier, słabsi od Hiszpanii

Współczynnik (indeks) Hirsha (H) został przedstawiony niedawno przez amerykańskiego fizyka J.E. Hirscha w PNAS (2005, 102, 16569−72). Praca Hirscha była szerzej opisana w „Forum Akademickim” w artykule Pawła Misiaka (2005, 9, 57−9). Współczynnik H równy jest liczbie publikacji cytowanych co najmniej h razy. H = 20 oznacza, że 20. z kolei publikacja badacza – jeżeli uszeregowane były one w kolejności uzyskanych cytowań – cytowana była nie mniej niż 20 razy. Współczynnik nadaje się do porównywania nie tylko pojedynczych naukowców, ale także jakości pracy instytucji czy ośrodków naukowych w poszczególnych miastach lub całych krajach. Co ważne, szybkość jego wyznaczenia jest mierzona w sekundach. Wydaje się, że oprócz impact factor (IF), używanego przez ministerstwo do oceniania placówek naukowych, współczynnik H również świetnie nadawałby się do tego celu i mógłby być jego cennym uzupełnieniem, w większym bowiem stopniu niż IF odzwierciedla element jakości publikacji.

Przedstawię tutaj dane na temat publikacji wchodzących w skład współczynnika H dla Polski w okresie od stycznia 2000 do lipca 2007. Poszukiwania przeprowadzono korzystając głównie z bazy Scopus, dodatkowo także z bazy ISI Web of Science. W tym czasie pojawiło się 127 612 publikacji z krajową afiliacją, współczynnik H dla Polski wyniósł 122. Porównując to z innymi krajami, Hiszpania (kraj o podobnej liczbie ludności): 261 842 prace, H = 189, Ukraina: 42 570 prac, H = 62, Szwecja (mało ludności): H = 207, Węgry: 41 420 publikacji, H = 113. Zatem jakość naszej nauki mierzona współczynnikiem H nie wygląda najlepiej, jesteśmy znacznie lepsi od Ukrainy czy małych Węgier, ale znacznie słabsi od Hiszpanii czy Szwecji, o naukowych potęgach nie wspominam.

Pełna lista liczy 123 publikacje (prace o numerach 120−123 uzyskały po 122 cytowania), zatem znalazł się na niej mniej niż jeden promil prac z krajową afiliacją. Najwięcej publikacji na liście dotyczy medycyny klinicznej – 57, 33 prace dotyczą fizyki, 21 medycyny eksperymentalnej, 12 chemii, 9 astronomii (niektóre zaliczane są do kilku dziedzin nauki). Najwięcej prac wchodzących w skład indeksu H opublikował Uniwersytet Warszawski – 16, Instytut Fizyki Jądrowej PAN im. Henryka Niewodniczańskiego w Krakowie dostarczył 10 publikacji, Akademia Medyczna w Gdańsku ma ich 7, a Centrum Astronomiczne im. Mikołaja Kopernika PAN w Warszawie 6. Po 5 publikacji mają: Instytut Fizyki Jądrowej PAN w Warszawie i Akademie Medyczne w Warszawie i Wrocławiu, a także Collegium Medicum UJ oraz sam Uniwersytet Jagielloński w Krakowie. Po 4 prace mają: Akademia Pedagogiczna w Krakowie (Obserwatorium Astronomiczne), Instytut Problemów Jądrowych im. Andrzeja Sołtana w Świerku, Instytut Gruźlicy i Chorób Płuc w Warszawie. Po 3 publikacje mają: Pomorska Akademia Medyczna w Szczecinie, Śląska Akademia Medyczna w Katowicach, Politechnika Gdańska, AGH, Centrum Onkologii – Instytut Marii Skłodowskiej−Curie w Warszawie. Po 2 prace mają: Uniwersytet Medyczny w Łodzi, Uniwersytet Wrocławski, Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu, Akademia Świętokrzyska w Kielcach, Politechnika Poznańska i Wrocławska, Centrum Medycyny Doświadczalnej i Klinicznej PAN w Warszawie, CBMIM PAN w Łodzi i Bioinfobank w Poznaniu.

Geograficznie dominuje Warszawa – 57 prac, 27 powstało w Krakowie, 10 w Gdańsku, 9 we Wrocławiu, 7 w Poznaniu, inne ośrodki dostarczyły od 1 do 3 publikacji. Akademie medyczne dostarczyły 33 publikacje, jednostki PAN – 21, uniwersytety – 26, politechniki – 11, akademie pedagogiczne i szpitale po 6.

Naukowcy, którzy opublikowali najwięcej prac to Jacek Jassem – medycyna (5) oraz Adam Torbicki – medycyna (4). Po 3 prace mają fizycy: Andrzej Budzanowski, Tomasz Dietl, Barbara Wosiek i Roman Hołyński oraz medycy: Anna Płużyńska i Jerzy Kuch, a także astronom Jerzy Krzesiński. Po 2 publikacje mają: Piotr Cieplak, Tadeusz Marek Krygowski i Sławomir Penczak – chemia, Andrzej Zdziarski – astronomia, Sławomir Filipek, Leszek Rychlewski – biologia, Irena Hausmanowa−Petrusewicz i Tadeusz Pieńkowski – medycyna oraz fizycy: Andrzej Eskreys, Danuta Kisielewska, Zbigniew Majka i Mariusz Przybycień. Niestety, niektórych nazwisk, powtarzających się kilka razy, nie byłem w stanie zweryfikować korzystając z informatora nauki oraz Internetu.

Aż 62 prace (51 proc. całości) oznaczono na końcu słowem multi. Oznacza to publikacje, które powstały w bardzo wielu ośrodkach (czasem ponad 100), przy udziale licznych autorów (czasem ponad 100). Bibliografia takiej pracy sprowadza się do nazwiska pierwszego autora i nazwisk autorów polskich, jak również nazw krajowych instytucji naukowych. Zrobiono to ze względu na objętość, gdyż bibliografia może zająć całą stronę teksu. Jak wynika z listy, pozycje te często dotyczą medycyny, są to wtedy wieloośrodkowe badania kliniczne. Grupa publikacji dotyczących fizyki i astronomii to często prace powstające dzięki urządzeniom dostępnym w kilku miejscach na świecie. W 40 dominują autorzy zagraniczni. Powstaje pytanie, jak wartościować autorstwo w takich publikacjach? Nie ma na nie dobrej odpowiedzi, niemniej jasno wynika, że najczęściej cytowane polskie publikacje to prace powstające poza krajem, a w ich tworzeniu nasi autorzy raczej nie odgrywają dominującej roli. Tylko 27 publikacji (22 proc. całości) to prace, w których dominują (ponad 50 do 100 proc. udziału) autorzy krajowi (nazwiska tłustym drukiem).

Bolączkami przy sporządzaniu tego typu rankingów jest indywidualizm czy może niefrasobliwość badaczy w podawaniu afiliacji – pojawiają się różne nazwy tych samych instytucji naukowych, różnie pisane są nazwy miast, adresy są często niepełne, nie mówiąc o błędach w nazwiskach. Powinno to zostać ujednolicone w interesie badacza oraz jednostki naukowej. Lista publikacji zawiera prace w kolejności cytowań, których liczba jest wytłuszczona i umieszczona na końcu danych dotyczących publikacji.
